A one-off pomegranate wine box stool from the FLARA COLLECTS Orchard Series, made from an original Collines de L’If Saint-Émilion 2017 wooden wine crate, a hand-painted linen seat and contemporary black metal hairpin legs. A wonderfully useful occasional stool for a hallway, kitchen, bedroom or dressing table, with a very fine former life in the cellars of Saint-Émilion.

The wine crate once carried Collines de L’If Saint-Émilion 2017, the second wine of Château L’If, the celebrated Right Bank estate created by the Thienpont family, who also own the much-admired Château Le Pin in Pomerol. Made principally from Merlot, with Cabernet Franc bringing a little lift and structure, it is a wine with the plush dark-fruit character and velvety charm so associated with Saint-Émilion. Rather luxurious cargo for a small wooden box.

We have kept the original wine markings visible, because they are part of the furniture’s story. There is something particularly pleasing about an object that has travelled from Bordeaux cellars to a London hallway, carrying a trace of long lunches, old bottles and excellent company with it.

The padded seat is upholstered in linen hand-painted by a local linen artist for our Orchard Series. Rich ruby pomegranates, scattered seeds and leafy green branches sit against a soft natural linen ground, giving the stool a deliciously decorative, almost Mediterranean feel. The painted artwork has been sealed, so it can be used and enjoyed as upholstery fabric should be, rather than treated like a museum piece.

Set on crisp black metal hairpin legs, the stool feels both retro and suitably modern. Use it as an extra perch in the kitchen, a useful seat for pulling on boots in the hall, or tuck it under a dressing table for a little flourish of colour. A handsome Bordeaux wine crate, now recast as a rather splendidly useful piece of furniture.
