A spectacular large porcelain table lamp from The Ritz Club, with a domed cover, gilt metal fitting and an exuberant hand-decorated floral design. Elegant vertical panels of colourful flowers and foliage climb the body, while a large central bouquet provides the full, glorious flourish. Its original “Property of The Ritz Club” label remains underneath.
We are dating this lamp to the 1978 restoration and opening of The Ritz Club, a basement casino. Its interiors were conceived as a theatrical revival of the Ritz’s old-world glamour, rich with gilt decoration, faux-marble columns, pale pink and cream rooms, crystal chandeliers and even a cloud-painted ceiling above the gaming tables.
This is not a shy lamp. It is for an important side table, a wonderfully full bookcase or the corner of a room that needs a flourish of clubland splendour. Switch it on and imagine the clink of a martini glass, a very lucky hand at cards and the faint sound of someone saying, “One more?”
