Lamp, with pink tones, Ritz Club

Price: £160

Dimensions: Height 50 cm, Length 16 cm, Depth 16 cm (19.7 in x 6.3 in x 6.3 in). There is some rusting to the base, mainly at the rear, we haven’t repaired this as we feel it adds to the piece.

Shade not included, the lamp has recent electrical testing stickers from the Ritz Club before it closed in 2020 and we have had an electrician look at this lamp this year who deemed it worthy.

A wonderfully glamorous porcelain table lamp from The Ritz Club, the legendary private casino in Piccadilly. Its tall, vase-shaped body is decorated with colourful floral sprays, delicate gilt latticework and a central bouquet, all set above an elegant gilt base. The underside retains its original “Property of The Ritz Club” inventory label, a marvellous trace of its former life.

We are dating this lamp to the Club’s lavish 1978 refurbishment, when the former Ritz Bar and Grill was transformed into an opulent private gaming club. The scheme celebrated the hotel’s original 1906 Louis XVI mood with cream, pink, rose and gilt, forests of palms, glittering mirrors, chandeliers and no shortage of gold leaf.

The Ritz Club closed in 2020, making these surviving pieces of its decorative world particularly lovely reminders of an era when London nights involved roulette, champagne and a little more sparkle than strictly necessary. Perfect as a bedside lamp or a small, gleaming moment on a desk, console or side table.
